The true meaning of cooperation was something I learned after getting my blue pelt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. After getting my belt with others who got theirs upgraded, we stood before those that hadn’t gotten theirs. It was then that the Mestre reminded us to show our respect and gratitude to the other students. Because it was thanks to their willingness to spar with us, that had given us the opportunity to raise our mastery of the craft. I realized that he was right, that my individualistic view blinded me to the reality that I needed others to get better. That it was cooperation, not only my effort, that got me here. So, I showed true gratitude and humility. This is why I see cooperation as the word for 2026, because I think it will be a year where I cannot achieve what I want without cooperation. I will have teachers, partners and co-workers, who will help me on my way. I will help others and get help from others to create something that I couldn’t achieve on my own. I will strive to remind myself that cooperation is the key to advancing my craft.
